Hello and welcome to my website!

My name is Catherine Khaperska and I am an eighteen-year old author from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I’ve been writing essentially all my life, and I love to read. My favourite genre is fantasy, though I also enjoy sci-fi and dystopian literature — and I love a good romantic side plot! My favourite authors are Rick Riordan, V. E. Schwab, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Lucy Maud Montgomery, to name a few.

I typically write novels, however I also write short stories and poetry. My novels lean towards speculative fiction while my short stories lean contemporary. My poetry contains a mix of topics and feature unique artistic choices. My work in general features themes of resilience, hope, and perseverance, with relationships at their core. My dream is to be a published novelist as a full-time career.

As I grow as a person and as I writer, I like to inspire young writers and foster connections with creatives in my town by being active and proactive in various literary communities. I attend literary events put on by organizations across the city. I am a judge for the Helen Creighton Folklore Society Ghost Story Contest — and if that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same contest I’ve won twice before! It’s a great opportunity and I am always glad to come back and help when I can. I’ve gone to elementary and middle schools in my area to speak about my experiences as a young author, and presented poetry at the Mount St. Vincent University (MSVU) Annual Girl’s Conference after having won 3rd place in their poetry competition for the Day of the Girl Child. I was an editor at And Gallons magazine, a NewPages accredited magazine (currently closed). I also recorded segments for the Halifax Public Libraries Teen Podcast (“It Came From The Second Floor”) for the early and late 2022 terms. You can find a list of my publishing/literary achievements on my Publications page.

Currently, I am a student at Dalhousie University pursuing the Bachelor of Commerce with a minor in Creative Writing. I am passionate about the creative side of business as well as the business side of creative industries, and hope to use my skills to achieve my lifelong literary dreams. I am the Newsletter Coordinator for the Dalhousie Commerce Society and continue to remain active in my academic and local communities.

Besides reading and writing, I have many hobbies. I did gymnastics for nine years and competitive dance for three. I also am an avid video gamer, playing games such as Minecraft as well as story-based or strategy games. I like to sew, knit, and crochet my own clothing, and I like to create all sorts of things from a variety of materials, including, most recently, cosplay! I am a music lover as well, and I played the clarinet in my school’s band(s) since 2017. I was part of my high school Improv Team since 2022, placing third in 2023, second in 2024, and 4th regionally but 3rd in the online national competition in 2025!

I continue my love of theatre and music by volunteering with the Canadian Improv Games, attending Dalprov sessions and playing the clarinet in Dal Theatre Society’s pit band – currently rehearsing the musical Chicago!

Thanks for reading, and I hope you stay a while — who knows the kinds of stories we can build together in the future? 🙂
